Maryland Glass Co. Cobalt Blue Top Hat Ashtray

This cobalt blue glass top hat has a great story: originally made by Maryland Glass Corporation in the 1940s–50s as a novelty container for Lowell Hand Cream Deodorant ("Blue Gem Cream") out of Piqua, Ohio, it was designed to be reused as a decorative ashtray or toothpick holder once the cream was gone. The exterior has a striking pebbled/stippled texture over deep cobalt glass, with molded cigarette rests at the rim. A charming piece of mid-century advertising history that doubles as functional glass decor.
